Hiring a campervan in Montreal

Montreal sits on an island in the St Lawrence, and the campervan problem is the bridges, the cones and the old streets rather than a shortage of places to go.

The Laurentian Autoroute runs north into lake and ski country within a reasonable first day. The Eastern Townships spread southeast into a softer rural map. Quebec City is a few hours downriver, a walled goal rather than a suburb. Old Montreal itself is for walking; a motorhome in those streets is a mistake you make once.

The airport, YUL, is at Dorval on the west of the island. Collecting there can put you on a highway without the downtown bridges; a centre-city depot means you have opted into them. Signage and rental paperwork may be in French. A handover is a specific depot, not a key drop in every neighbourhood.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Ask which bridge the depot expects you to use, and leave the island before you park for the night. Circling for a legal bay downtown is the wrong end to a handover.

  2. 02

If you are going to Quebec City, give the day enough time for the highway and a site outside the walls. The old city is a walk from a proper park, not a destination for the van itself.

  3. 03

In winter, confirm snow tyres and a realistic daily range. In summer roadworks, believe the extra hour.
