Plan your pickup and your first stop
Halifax is a compact harbour city on a peninsula, and a campervan trip that starts here is an Atlantic trip.
Peggy’s Cove is close, on a narrow shore road that ends in a village with almost nowhere for a large motorhome to linger. The South Shore toward Lunenburg and Mahone Bay is the gentler first day. The Cabot Trail, the drive people mean when they say Nova Scotia, is on Cape Breton: you spend a long day just reaching a sensible start at Baddeck or Chéticamp.
Newfoundland is another leap, via the ferry from North Sydney, which is itself a drive plus a sailing that must include the vehicle. The Bay of Fundy coast sits the other way, toward the Annapolis Valley. Right-hand driving, fog, and a city handover that is not every dockside street.
Keep night one on the South Shore or near the city, and give Cape Breton its own travel day before you start the Trail. A dawn-to-dark loop from Halifax is a bus tour you happen to be driving.
If Newfoundland is the plan, book the North Sydney ferry for the van and the return, and read the arrival time before you promise a Gros Morne sunset.
Fog and moose are the rural hazards, especially at dusk. Use booked campsites, and do not block the Peggy’s Cove lanes while you decide the van is too big.
