Hiring a campervan in Vancouver
Vancouver is mountains against a harbour, and a campervan collected here inherits both.

YVR sits on Sea Island, so the first problem is a bridge, and if you go south toward the Tsawwassen ferries, a tunnel with height limits that a tall motorhome may not clear. Horseshoe Bay, on the north shore, sends vehicle ferries to Nanaimo and the Sunshine Coast; Tsawwassen sends them to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. Passenger tickets do not carry the van. The Sea to Sky highway toward Whistler is the celebrated mainland drive, scenic, busy and historically a rockfall road.
Calgary is not a neighbour. It is a full day over mountain passes. Stanley Park’s seawall is not a shakedown loop for a motorhome. A Vancouver handover is one depot or airport desk, not every neighbourhood on the inlet.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Book the ferry for the vehicle on the sailing you can actually make after handover, then add a buffer. Missing it is a lost day, not a short delay.
- 02
Check height before you commit to the Massey Tunnel or a low parkade. Ask the depot which exit fits the van you were given.
- 03
Put night one in a booked site in the direction you are going, not back on a city street. In winter, the Sea to Sky and the passes inland demand tyres and a slower plan than the summer brochure.
