Plan your pickup and your first stop
Calgary sits on the prairie where the foothills start, and that position is the whole campervan argument.
Banff and Canmore are close enough that a careful first afternoon can already be in the mountains, which is rare in a country of this size. Lake Louise is further up the valley. The Icefields Parkway then runs north toward Jasper between ice, elk and weather that changes at the passes.
The airport, YYC, is northeast of downtown. A city depot means Deerfoot or a crosstown leg before you ever see a peak; an airport handover can point you west with less of the grid. Winter is a real driving season here, with chinook swings and ice in the same week. A Calgary collection point is not a pickup in every suburb along the Bow.
Point the van west on day one and sleep in the mountains or the foothills, not back in the city after a late loop. The park roads look short and fill with stopping traffic.
In winter, confirm tyres and carry a pace that suits ice at the passes. Summer still brings snow on the high road and afternoon storms.
Book campsites in Banff and along the Parkway well ahead in July and August. A viewpoint is not an overnight, and national-park rules are posted for a reason.
