Plan your pickup and your first stop
Wertheim watches the Tauber flow into the Main under a castle, and the half-timbered wedge between the rivers is too tight for a handover.
The practical start is on the edge, the Hymerring side of town, where commercial streets still connect to the valley roads and to the A3 at Lengfurt. The old centre is a walk across a short bridge. The driving choices are the Tauber valley upstream toward Bad Mergentheim and the Romantic Road towns, or the Main toward Miltenberg and the Spessart.
Both valleys are wooded and both have towns that look drivable until the market place. The Spessart hills between them are a forest block with better main roads than side roads. Wertheim's job is the confluence: see it on foot, then pick a river.
Cross into the old wedge on foot. If the street begins to follow both rivers at once, you are in the part that does not turn around.
Bad Mergentheim and Miltenberg deserve the same treatment: outer car park, then the centre. Their main streets are the trap that looks like a through-road.
The A3 at Lengfurt is the weather and traffic escape. Valley fog in the Spessart can sit all morning while the motorway is merely dull. Use it without guilt.
