Hiring a campervan in Ulm

Ulm's minster and the fishermen's quarter stand inside an Umweltzone on the Baden-Württemberg bank of the Danube.

A green Umweltplakette is the inner-city rule. The fishermen's lanes are a famous trap: pretty, short and impossible to reverse out of with dignity. The A7 and A8 meet nearby and are the exits, north and south or east and west. Neu-Ulm, across the river, is the broader Bavarian bank and often the easier place to be in a van.

The Swabian Alb rises just northwest. Blaubeuren and the Blautopf are the classic first detour, a turquoise spring in a small town that still wants you to park properly. Upper Swabia to the south is gentler. The sparrow legend on the minster does not require a drive around the tower.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Fit the green disc, then park outside the fishermen's quarter and walk. There is no secret lane that makes the quarter workable.

  2. 02

Blaubeuren's spring is a car-park visit, not a riverside improvised stop. The town is small and the approach is shared with everyone who had the same idea.

  3. 03

If the Danube is high, trust the closures on the low roads and use the motorway bridges. The pretty bank is the one that goes under first.
