Hiring a campervan in Toulouse

Toulouse is the pink-brick city on the Garonne, broad and hot in summer, with a centre best crossed on foot and a low-emission zone to respect.

The Canal du Midi slips past the city, but its towpath is for bicycles and walkers, not for a campervan looking for a shortcut. The real drives leave the plain: west into the Gers and its bastides, east toward Carcassonne and the Cathar castles, or south into the Pyrenean valleys.

Those valleys are the mountain chapter. Roads toward the high passes and Andorra narrow, gain height, and close or chain up in winter in a way the Garonne quays never suggest. A June afternoon in place du Capitole does not forecast a col. Sleep outside the brick centre, where a motorhome is simply a vehicle again, and choose one direction for the next few days.

A few things worth knowing

Walk the brick centre from an outer stop. Do not try to park your way around Saint-Sernin in a coachbuilt van.

The canal is not a road. Enjoy the water from a bridge or a footpath, and keep the vehicle on the ordinary network.

If you go south, check the weather in the valley you chose, not only in Toulouse. Fuel before the last plain town. Mountain villages do not owe you a service point at dusk.
