Plan your pickup and your first stop
Avignon keeps the Palais des Papes and the broken bridge of Saint-Bénézet inside a ring of medieval walls.
During the July festival the intramuros streets are a pedestrian city. In any month they are a poor place for a campervan. The sensible pattern is to leave the vehicle outside the ramparts, walk in for the palace and the square, and sleep in the Rhône countryside or toward the Luberon.
From that base the Provençal drives are short and distinct: Pont du Gard to the west, Châteauneuf-du-Pape among the galets, the hill villages east of the river. This is not Normandy’s hedgerow country. The stone is pale, the summer air is hot, and the mistral runs down the Rhône corridor hard enough to matter for a tall vehicle on an open pitch.
Do not follow a navigation pin through a gate in the ramparts. Set the stop on the outside and walk the last minutes.
Pont du Gard’s approaches have limited room for long vehicles at busy hours. Go early, or see the aqueduct as a passenger outing and keep the van at the pitch.
Châteauneuf’s village streets climb between stone houses. The vineyard tracks below the village are the campervan view; the top of the village is for a short walk.
