Plan your pickup and your first stop
Amiens gathers around a vast Gothic cathedral and the hortillonnages, a patchwork of market gardens reached by small boat.
Those channels are not a campervan route. The city is a pause on the Somme: park outside the brick centre, walk the parvis, and use the van for the valley and the open Picard plateau.
This is northern France, closer in weather and road character to the Belgian border than to Provence. The land is broad, the light is often grey, and the interesting detours are the Somme battlefields toward Thiepval and the quiet river meadows upstream. A motorhome suits that landscape. It does not suit the towpaths.
Leave the floating gardens to the boats. The van stays on the road side of the Saint-Leu quarter, which is picturesque and narrow.
Battlefield lanes are small and sometimes busy with coaches. Start early, and do not expect a motorhome bay at every memorial.
Wind across the Picard plain is steady rather than dramatic. A low van is quieter at night on an unsheltered pitch than a high one with a roof-mounted awning.
