Hiring a campervan in Angers

Angers sits on the Maine just before it meets the Loire, a dark-slate city with a huge castle and the Apocalypse tapestry inside it.

The old lanes under the château are a walking errand. A campervan trip here is really a western Loire trip: Saumur downstream in spirit if not always in current, vineyards of Anjou, and troglodyte caves cut into the tufa toward the east.

The valley is gentler than the Norman bocage and far greener than the Provençal limestone. Roads follow the levees, villages string along the water, and the cycling route on the banks is not a substitute for the van. Use the ordinary roads, sleep outside the slate centre, and treat Angers as the supply stop between Nantes and the châteaux closer to Tours.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

The castle esplanade is not a parking strategy. See the tapestry on foot and rejoin the van on the outer boulevards.

  2. 02

Tufa villages east of Angers have low cave mouths and tight main streets. Admire them from a signed stop, not by driving the shopping street in a coachbuilt body.

  3. 03

The Loire levees can be windy and, after heavy rain, occasionally closed. Keep a parallel road in mind rather than assuming the bank road is always open.
