The Cours Mirabeau, the fountains and the Mazarin quarter sit under plane trees, and a motorhome has no honest business in those streets. Spend the morning on foot, then point the vehicle at Mont Sainte-Victoire or the cedar and vineyard roads of the Luberon.

Provence is a different drive from Normandy. Afternoons burn, the light is hard, and the mistral can shove a tall van on the open plateau between Aix and the Rhône. Distances that look short on a map stretch once you leave the autoroute for the D roads. A first night among the pines east of town is calmer than any attempt to sleep against the ring road.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Keep the historic streets for shoes, not for the van. Market mornings fill the outer approaches early, so arrive before the stalls take the kerb or come back after lunch.

  2. 02

Water and shade matter on the south-facing road toward Le Tholonet. The mistral is the other seasonal fact: an exposed pitch is noisy in a tall body and merely breezy in a low one.

  3. 03

The calanques west of Cassis are not a motorhome excursion. Many coves are foot or boat only, and the cliff lanes are regulated. Keep the van inland and choose the coast as a short, separate outing.
