Stuttgart (Sindelfingen) is the motorway town southwest of the basin, and the handover on the Mahdentalstraße side is closer to woods and junctions than to Schlossplatz.
The A8 and A81 cross here. Plant traffic is part of the local day, especially when shifts change. Böblingen sits against Sindelfingen. The Schönbuch forest is the green edge. Stuttgart's Umweltzone is in the basin to the northeast, not in this yard.
You can be on the A8 toward the Alb and Ulm, or west toward Pforzheim and the Black Forest, without ever seeing the TV tower. That is the correct use of the place. The Mahdental itself is a wooded notch, a pleasant local road and a bad idea as a city shortcut. The basin remains available, with a green sticker, when you actually want the city.
Join the motorway before you sightsee. If a shift is changing at the plants, the local streets are the slow ones and the A81 is the relief.
Stuttgart's green Umweltplakette is for the basin. Fit it before you drive northeast into the city, not after the first tram street.
The Schönbuch has marked car parks for walkers. They are day stops. The night is a campsite on the Alb side or along the motorway towns, reserved when the weather is good.
