Hiring a campervan in Stuttgart

Stuttgart sits in a steep basin with an Umweltzone, and the campervan relief is the climb onto the Swabian Alb or the Neckar valley downstream.

Schlossplatz and the Königstraße are walks. A green Umweltplakette is required in the basin. The A8 and A81 meet here and then escape, west toward the Black Forest approaches or south onto the Alb. The B10 follows the Neckar. The Rems valley to the east is the softer alternative, through wine hills that are prettier than they are wide.

The basin traps traffic and, on still days, the air. That is a reason to leave, not a reason to circle. Weinsteige and the other steep residential climbs are a poor way to gain height. Use the motorway to get onto the plateau, then look at the views from a place where the van can stop.

A few things worth knowing

Fit the green disc before you move. Stuttgart's Umweltzone is the basin you are already in if the handover is central, and it is easy to re-enter if you take a pretty shortcut off the motorway.

Do not climb out via a residential steige because the map shows a short line. Those streets were built for cars that live there.

Alb evenings cool quickly and the valley campsites fill when the city has a heat warning. Reserve the night before you climb, and keep the Rems valley as a calmer fallback if the plateau road is a procession.
