Hiring a campervan in Siegen

Siegen fills a bowl of the Sieg valley under the Rothaar hills, and the useful campervan line is the southern road toward Eiserfeld rather than the streets under the Oberes Schloss.

Eiserfelder Straße leads out of the university centre into the valley where the town becomes works, river and forest. The A45 is the fast north-south, Ruhr one way and Frankfurt the other. East, the Wittgenstein country is quieter and higher.

This is a wet, hilly region. The castle is a walk. The valley towns beyond Eiserfeld tighten and then open toward the Bigge lake, which is already more Sauerland than Siegen. You do not need a sticker scheme to behave well here. You need to stay on a road that still has a centre line.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Point the first navigation at Eiserfeld or the A45, not at the Oberes Schloss. The castle hill is the walk after the van is settled.

  2. 02

Forest towns in this valley often have a market morning that fills the only street. If you are passing then, wait it out on the arterial.

  3. 03

The Bigge shore, if that is the night, is a reservation in fair weather and a fog trap when the Siegen bowl is merely cloudy. Give it daylight.
