Hiring a campervan in Rottweil

Rottweil stands above the young Neckar and calls itself the oldest town in the southwest, with tower gates that are a spectacle you do not drive through.

The campervan exit is the A81, which passes close and runs north toward Stuttgart or south toward the Swiss approaches, plus the valley roads that follow the river before it grows up. The Black Forest is west. The Swabian Alb is east. Both are real trips. The gate towers are a walk from a car park that is not inside them.

Fasnet, the carnival, fills the old town with processions that close streets. On an ordinary week the limitation is simply width. There is no sticker scheme to solve it. You go around.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Park outside the gates even during a quiet week. The towers are doing an old job, and they still do it to roof boxes.

  2. 02

If your dates collide with Fasnet, assume the centre is shut to you and sleep well outside town. The procession is the visit; the van is not in it.

  3. 03

The A81 is the weather backup when the Alb escarpment or the forest valleys are icy. It is less romantic and it remains a road.
