Plan your pickup and your first stop
Roetgen is a rainy Eifel town pressed against the Belgian border, south of Aachen, and the collection is a forest-edge start for the High Venn and the Rur reservoirs.
A road name like Zum Genagelten Stein tells you the scale: local, wooded, not a cathedral close. Monschau is nearby and famously pretty and famously tight. The Rursee lies southeast. Aachen is north, and its inner Umweltzone applies only if you drive into that city.
Belgium is a junction away. A private van does not buy a vignette there, but the Venn roads are exposed, foggy and often busier with day-trippers than their width deserves. Winter adds ice on the plateau while Roetgen's main street is merely wet. This is a landscape start. The city to the north is optional.
Check the plateau weather before you climb. Fog on the Venn is ordinary, and a tall van in it is slower than the locals you are holding up.
If Aachen is the errand, fit the green Umweltplakette before you leave the forest. Roetgen will not have asked for it.
Monschau's lower town is a walking street. Use the outer car parks even when a gap appears to exist; the gap belongs to a resident or a delivery and it closes behind you.
