Plan your pickup and your first stop
Rheinfelden, on the Baden bank, faces its Swiss namesake across the High Rhine.
The German old core is small and better walked than driven. The campervan roads are the river corridor east toward Waldshut and the Schaffhausen direction, the A861 and A98 links, and the climb north into the Hotzenwald. A collection grouped with this area may actually sit up the Wiesental in Maulburg; if your pin is the town itself, you are on the river, next to a hydroelectric landscape and a border bridge.
Switzerland begins at the bridge. Their motorway vignette applies if you use those roads, and Swiss Rheinfelden is not a more drivable old town than the German one. Basel is close to the west. The southern Black Forest, not the twin high streets, is the spacious day.
Buy the Swiss vignette before the bridge if there is any chance you will cross. The frontier here looks like a town street.
Park outside either old core. The hydro plant and the river path are more interesting from a bike or on foot than from a queue of vans.
The A98 is not a continuous motorway fantasy. Where the fast road stops, the replacement is a town street. Read the gap before you promise yourself a quick hop to Waldshut.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
