Hiring a campervan in Poitiers

Poitiers stands on a hill above the Clain, a university city of Romanesque churches on the long north–south road between the Loire and Bordeaux.

Futuroscope is nearby and should not be confused with the medieval centre: it is an outer destination with its own access. The old town is steps, spires and a walking morning. A campervan uses Poitiers as a civilised night on the Atlantic axis, then continues.

The country around is gentle farmland, neither the Norman hedgerows nor the Provençal stone. It is a good place to learn a vehicle, to break a journey from Nantes or Paris toward the Gironde, and to avoid the fiction that every French city has a corniche. Sleep outside the hilltop and climb back on foot if you want the churches in the evening light.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Do not set a pin on the cathedral and follow it uphill in a motorhome. The centre is a hilltop. Walk the last part.

  2. 02

Keep Futuroscope and the old town as separate errands. They are not neighbours in any useful driving sense for a tall vehicle at closing time.

  3. 03

The through-roads are simple. Use them. A scenic detour here is pleasant farmland, not a mountain pass, so do not budget Alpine hours for a Poitou afternoon.
