Hiring a campervan in Perpignan

Perpignan is the capital of the Roussillon, a Catalan city on a windy plain under the Canigou.

The tramontane scours the sky clear and can rock a tall campervan on an open pitch. The centre, with its brick palace, is a walking errand. The drives are the Côte Vermeille toward Collioure and the Spanish border, or the Tech and Têt valleys climbing toward the Pyrenees.

This is not Provence, though the summer is hot, and it is certainly not Normandy. The language on the signs shifts toward Catalan, the coast is a series of small ports under schist hills, and those port streets are too tight for a motorhome. Sleep on the plain or in a valley campsite, and visit Collioure or Céret as a person, not as a vehicle.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Respect the tramontane. An exposed pitch on the plain is a noisy night in a high van; a valley pitch is calmer and a little warmer after dark.

  2. 02

Collioure’s waterfront is a walking town in summer. Leave the van well outside and expect the approach road to be slow.

  3. 03

The high valleys change quickly from sunny plain to narrow gorge. Fuel and water on the plain before you commit to a day that ends in a mountain village.
