Plan your pickup and your first stop
Passau puts its old town on a peninsula between the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz, and it is a dead end for a motorhome.
The handover that makes sense is off that peninsula, on the inland streets such as the Gutenbergstraße side, where you can still turn around. The three-river point is a stroll after you have parked. Coloured houses, the cathedral and the flood marks are the walk. They are not a through-route, because there is no through.
Upstream, the Danube runs toward Vilshofen, Deggendorf and the edge of the Bavarian Forest. The Inn valley runs toward Schärding and Austria, which is a motorway vignette if you continue on their roads. The Ilz valley to the north is the narrow, wooded one. None of these require a lap of the peninsula to begin.
Park before the old-town island and walk. When a street starts to feel like a pier, you have gone too far to enjoy reversing.
Buy the Austrian vignette before you commit to the Inn as a through-route. Schärding is close enough that the border can be an accidental extra.
Flood is not theoretical here. If the river is up, the pretty quay roads close and the inland bypass is the adult choice. Read the local marks rather than a week-old photo.
