Plan your pickup and your first stop
Nuremberg keeps its imperial castle inside walls, and an Umweltzone over the inner city, so the Pegnitz lanes are a walking circuit.
A green Umweltplakette is the urban requirement. The A3, A9 and A73 are the exits: east toward Franconian Switzerland, south toward the Franconian Lake District and the Altmühl, west toward Ansbach and the Romantic Road. The old town's trams and pedestrian streets are not a warmup lap.
The former rally grounds in the south are spacious and sober, a different kind of space from the castle hill, and still not a campervan shortcut into the centre. Once you are beyond the built-up edge the limestone country begins quickly. That is the payoff for having stayed on the motorway through the city.
Park outside the walls. If the pin is on the castle, the last part is a hill you walk, and the green sticker should already be on the glass because the Umweltzone covers the approach.
Franconian lake pitches in summer are a reservation, particularly around the Altmühl. Leave Nuremberg with the night chosen.
The south side of the city can be slow when the exhibition centre is busy. If your exit is the A9 or A6, check that calendar only so you are not surprised, then stay on the motorway.
