Hiring a campervan in Nice

Nice stretches the Promenade des Anglais between a tight old town and a port that sends vehicle ferries toward Corsica, especially Bastia and, on some sailings, Ajaccio.

The beach and the lanes behind the market are for walking. A campervan on the promenade at sunset is in the wrong play. The useful drives are inland: the Var valley, the perched villages, and the mountain roads toward the Mercantour, including the Col de Turini when it is open.

The famous corniches are not a single road. The lowest is built-up and hostile to a long motorhome; the higher ones are scenic and still narrow when a coach appears. Monaco’s streets are a separate refusal. If the van is boarding for Corsica, that port day replaces the hill day. If it is not, leave the coast by mid-morning and sleep where the air cools.

A few things worth knowing

Do not follow the seafront as a through route. Approach the port or the old town on foot from a stop you have already judged for height and length.

Turini and the Mercantour roads change with weather. A mild morning on the Promenade des Anglais does not mean the col is clear of cloud or closure.

Summer traffic on the coast road is a daily tide. Shop and leave early, and keep the overnight in the hills or well east or west of the bay.
