Plan your pickup and your first stop
Neu-Ulm is the Bavarian bank opposite Ulm, broader and more modern, and it is the practical place to start before anyone crosses the Danube to look at the minster.
Leibnizstraße and the surrounding blocks are ordinary town streets, not fishermen's lanes. The Iller joins the Danube nearby. The A7 passes and gives you north toward the Swabian approaches or south toward Memmingen and the Allgäu. Ulm's famous tower is across the bridge and inside that city's Umweltzone.
A green sticker is for the crossing, not for leaving the Bavarian side. Neu-Ulm's grid, shaped in part by postwar planning, is easier to drive than Ulm's old bank and still not a place to sightsee from the cab. The minster square cannot take the van. The river can be walked from either side once you have parked.
Cross into Ulm only with the green Umweltplakette fitted and with a car park already chosen on the near side of the old town. The minster square is not that car park.
The A7 is the clean exit south or north. Bridge-hopping 'for a quick look' is how the first hour becomes a low-emission one-way system.
Danube paths draw cyclists onto the river roads. Give them room, and keep overnight stops on signed pitches rather than the flood-side meadows.
