Hiring a campervan in Naumburg

Naumburg is the Saale-Unstrut cathedral town well south of Leipzig, and the first landscape is stone terraces and wine villages, not a trade-fair city.

The handover sits in the town, on a street such as the one named for Franz Julius Hoeltz, rather than on Leipzig's ring. The cathedral hill and the old gates are a walk. Freyburg and Bad Kösen continue the wine road along the river. The Dornburg castles stand over the Saale a little farther north.

The A9 is the fast north-south, with Leipzig one way and Nuremberg the other. Leipzig's centre, if you drive into it, keeps an Umweltzone and wants a green sticker. Naumburg does not. The terrace roads are narrow by nature. They are also the reason to be here, so the van goes as far as the valley floor and the tasting rooms are reached on foot.

A few things worth knowing

Park below the cathedral and walk up. The gates were not adjusted for roof boxes, let alone a motorhome.

If Leipzig is the next city, fit the green sticker before its Umweltzone. The A9 approach makes the city feel sudden.

Harvest weeks fill the terrace lanes with tractors and visitors. Stay on the valley road until you are at a reserved pitch, and do not block a winery apron.
