Plan your pickup and your first stop
Nantes stands on the Loire where the river begins to feel the Atlantic, a university city with the Machines de l’Île on a former shipyard island.
That island is a spectacle for pedestrians. A campervan trip uses Nantes as a hinge: north into Brittany’s edge, south to the Vendée coast, or east along the valley toward Anjou and the muscadet vineyards.
The light is oceanic. Weather crosses in bands, the estuary is wide and windy, and the coast south of the river is long beach rather than calanque. Nothing about this west-of-France driving prepares you for a Provençal village or a Corsican ferry, which is a reason to enjoy it on its own terms. Sleep outside the tram centre and let the city be a market and a walk.
The Île de Nantes is not a driving loop for a motorhome. Visit it, then rejoin the van away from the shipyard bridges if they are busy.
Coastal weekends in the Vendée fill early in summer. A Thursday night inland is easy; a Saturday night on the beach is a reservation problem, not a driving problem.
Wind on the estuary is stronger than in the city streets. Choose a pitch with a hedge if the forecast is fresh, especially in a tall body.
