Hiring a campervan in Munich
Munich keeps an Umweltzone inside the Mittlerer Ring, so the campervan city is the A99 and the motorways that leave it.

Marienplatz, the English Garden and the royal residences are walks or U-Bahn rides. A green Umweltplakette is what the inner zone asks for. The A95 runs south toward Garmisch and the Alps, the A8 southeast toward Rosenheim, Chiemsee and Salzburg, and the same A8 northwest toward Augsburg. Starnberg and the Ammersee are the nearer water.
Oktoberfest dates transform the Theresienwiese side of town into a place you do not approach in a van. Outside those weeks the ring still clogs at ordinary rush hours, which is why a lake pitch or an Alpine valley is a better first night than any plan that 'starts with the centre'. The Alps look close on a fine day and still take a careful hour.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Have the green disc on the windscreen before a navigation shortcut pulls you inside the Mittlerer Ring. The zone boundary is easier to cross than to notice.
- 02
During Oktoberfest, stay well outside the city and travel in. The grounds and the approach streets are a pedestrian festival with occasional very lost vans.
- 03
Alpine weather turns on the valley ramps. If Garmisch is night one, leave Munich with time for a slow last half hour, and use a proper campsite rather than a scenic pull-off on the Loisach.
