Hiring a campervan in Melbourne
Melbourne is a tram city on a wide bay, and the laneways that make it a good place to walk make it a poor place to learn a motorhome.

The campervan reason to collect here is the exit. The Great Ocean Road begins once you have cleared Geelong and Anglesea, then narrows into a cliff coast with limited places for a large vehicle to pause. The Yarra Valley and the Dandenongs are the closer, gentler alternative. The Grampians and the alpine high country are longer commitments.
Tullamarine sits northwest of the centre. An airport handover and a city depot put you on different ring-road problems before the scenery starts. The Spirit of Tasmania now leaves from Geelong, so a Bass Strait crossing is a western drive, not a dock at the end of the CBD. Most Melbourne neighbourhoods are not handover points.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Decide airport versus city handover before you land. Reversing across the West Gate or through tram streets with a new van is a wasted first hour.
- 02
Give the Great Ocean Road a full day to Apollo Bay or Port Campbell, not a sunset dash from the depot. Check that your vehicle length is welcome at the night’s site.
- 03
Hook turns and tram lanes in the inner city are for people who already know them. If the depot is central, ask for the exit route and follow that, not a car GPS that threads the grid.
