Plan your pickup and your first stop
Brisbane is a subtropical river city, and a campervan collected here should be aimed at leaving the bend of the Brisbane River rather than circling it.
North, the Bruce Highway runs up a long coast: the Sunshine Coast is the easy first day, and Cairns is still a multi-day haul past Gladstone, Rockhampton and Townsville. South, the Gold Coast is close enough to confuse the two starts, but the high-rise strip is a different handover from this river plain.
West, the story changes again, toward the ranges and eventually the inland roads. Moreton Bay’s islands are mostly a passenger-ferry outing, not a van route. A Brisbane depot is one collection point, not a key desk in every riverside neighbourhood.
If you land at the airport northeast of the centre, decide before handover whether the first junction points north up the Bruce or back toward the river. The two exits waste a surprising amount of afternoon if you reverse them.
Do not plan to reach Cairns, or even Airlie Beach, on the day you collect the van. Break the coast into days you can finish in daylight.
Summer storms and holiday traffic stack up on the highway. Book the first night’s campsite north or west of the city, and keep the van off narrow beach-town streets until you know its size.
