Hiring a campervan in Adelaide
Adelaide is a low, gridded capital on Gulf St Vincent, and that plain is why so many campervan trips start here without a fight.

The Barossa and McLaren Vale are short drives into wine country, and the Fleurieu coast is just beyond them. None of those easy afternoons resemble the Stuart Highway once you turn north: after Port Augusta the towns thin out and the day becomes a fuel and heat plan toward Alice Springs.
South is a different exit. The ferry at Cape Jervis carries vehicles to Kangaroo Island only when the van itself has a booking, and the island loop is not a warm-up for the coast road toward Melbourne. A handover in Adelaide is a named depot, not a claim that every suburb can hand you the keys.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Take the keys with enough daylight to leave the grid before you are judging the van’s width in peak traffic. An airport-side depot already sits north of the centre; a central handover needs a slower exit toward the hills.
- 02
If Kangaroo Island is on the route, book the vehicle onto the ferry and treat a foot-passenger ticket as the wrong product. Check length limits at the same time.
- 03
North of Port Augusta in summer, plan water, fuel and a proper campsite before the last town. Wildlife on the highway after dark is a reason to stop, not a reason to push on.
