Cairns is a tropical port under the mountains, and the campervan case for starting here is the land around it, not the Great Barrier Reef.
Reef days leave from the marina; the van stays in town or at a park. The Atherton Tablelands rise behind the city into a cooler plateau of lakes, waterfalls and dairy country, which is often the better night in humid weather. North, a short coast road ends at the Daintree River ferry, a vehicle crossing into the rainforest toward Cape Tribulation.
Cape York is not that ferry. It is a much longer, seasonal expedition, often unsealed, and many rentals forbid it. South, Brisbane is days away on the Bruce Highway. A Cairns handover is a city depot, not a key exchange in every beach suburb.
Cross the Daintree ferry with a vehicle booking in the busy season, and remember the last return of the day. Cape Tribulation is a dead-end for anyone who is not continuing on a permitted track.
Use the tablelands for relief from the coastal humidity, and do not leave swims or creek stops to guesswork. Crocodile and stinger seasons are local rules, posted for a reason.
Cyclone season can rewrite roads and plans. Refuel before the range roads, and book the first night so you are not hunting a site after a long arrival.
