Hiring a campervan in Darwin

Darwin is a harbour city on the Arafura Sea, small by capital standards and already in the tropics.

A campervan collected here is for the Top End: Litchfield’s waterfalls are the shorter loop, Kakadu is a larger commitment of floodplains and rock art, and Katherine sits further south as its own gorge day. The Stuart Highway then runs the length of the Territory to Alice Springs, a two-day drive of roadhouses if you go the whole way.

The wet season brings spectacular storms and road closures; the build-up before it is fiercely humid. Beaches around Darwin are not a default swim, because of crocodiles and, in the wet, box jellyfish. A city handover is one depot, not a pickup at every marina suburb.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Give Kakadu more than a rushed day from Darwin, and check which park roads are open. Flooding closes sections even when the highway into the region looks fine.

  2. 02

Carry fuel and drinking water for any day that leaves the Stuart. Roadhouses set both the range and the rhythm.

  3. 03

In the wet, rethink beach swims and low-lying camps. Book a proper site in town or near Batchelor or Jabiru rather than improvising on a verge after dark.
