Plan your pickup and your first stop
Maulburg sits in the Wiesental between Schopfheim and the climb toward Zell and Todtnau, a valley-floor collection for the southern Black Forest.
Alemannenstraße is ordinary valley-town commercial ground. Rheinfelden and the High Rhine are down the valley to the west, a separate choice from the forest climb. People sometimes expect a Rhine promenade because the wider area is grouped with Rheinfelden. The yard is in the meadow valley, with the river Wiese, mill history and a steep road in both directions.
The B317 is the spine and, for long stretches, the only sensible road. It carries trucks, cyclists and visitors who all believe they are the priority. Basel and the Swiss vignette appear only if you drop to the Rhine and cross. The Hotzenwald and Todtmoos, above the valley, are the high alternative, narrower again.
Stay on the B317 until your actual turn. Side streets in the valley towns look like links and end at a mill.
If the day includes Switzerland, buy the vignette before the border rather than assuming a Rhine bridge is only a viewpoint.
Todtmoos and the upper valley can be snowy while Maulburg is merely wet. Read the pass notes in winter, and do not treat a church car park as the night's stop when the climb takes longer than you thought.
