Plan your pickup and your first stop
Marseille is a bowl of hills around the Vieux-Port, with the Corniche and the calanques beyond.
The port is also one of the main French departures for a vehicle ferry to Corsica: Ajaccio, Bastia, Île Rousse and Propriano are the usual island ends, depending on the line and the day. If the van is sailing, the port timetable runs the trip. If the van is only visiting, the old harbour is a place to walk, not to drive.
The city has a low-emission zone and a street pattern that punishes hesitation in a tall vehicle. The famous calanques are mostly footpaths and regulated lanes; a motorhome is the wrong tool for a cove. Sleep on the outer hills, toward the Étang de Berre or the country inland of Cassis, and come back to the port when you actually have a reason.
Separate the ferry day from the sightseeing day. Port traffic, check-in and a sailing do not leave a calm hour for the Corniche.
Do not follow a scenic pin into the calanques. Park outside the regulated lanes and walk, or take a boat from a proper quay.
Summer heat in the bowl of the city is another reason to sleep higher or further inland. A shaded pitch outside beats a breezeless street inside.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
