Hiring a campervan in Mannheim

Mannheim places its famous grid, the Quadrate, inside an Umweltzone, and a southeast start around Friedrichsfeld is the calmer way onto the road.

Steinzeugstraße's side of town faces the A656 toward Heidelberg and the Bergstraße, not the water tower in the middle of the grid. The Rhine and the Neckar meet here. Across the Rhine, Ludwigshafen has its own Umweltzone. Heidelberg, down the Bergstraße, has one too.

A green badge is the tool for any of those inner cities. It is not required to roll out of Friedrichsfeld toward the Odenwald or south along the Bergstraße's orchard towns. Schwetzingen's palace gardens are close and, like every palace, happier if the van stays in the outer car park. The grid itself is a tram map.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Fit the green Umweltplakette before you enter Mannheim's grid, Ludwigshafen, or Heidelberg. Friedrichsfeld is the place to be ready, not the place that traps you.

  2. 02

Do not navigate to the water tower. The grid's one-way pattern is a fine way to learn your vehicle's width in front of an audience.

  3. 03

The Bergstraße towns share their weekend traffic with Heidelberg. Sleep in the Odenwald side valleys rather than on the main fruit-town street, and walk down in the morning.
