Plan your pickup and your first stop
Lyon Airport, Saint-Exupéry, sits east of the city on the plain that leads toward the Alps.
The handover is at the airport. It is not a collection in the Presqu’île, and it should not become one by habit of navigation. From the terminal side you can join the roads toward Grenoble, the Chartreuse and Annecy without crossing the two-river centre or its low-emission streets.
That eastern bias is the point of starting here. A first night in the pre-Alps, or a simple run south along the Rhône once you have skirted the city, teaches you the van while the light is still good. High cols such as the Galibier are not an airport-afternoon project. They are a next-day decision, and only in the season when the road is actually open.
Build a quiet first evening east or south of the airport. The briefing takes longer than a car pickup, and Grenoble is not next door.
If Annecy or Chamonix is the goal, commit to that valley at the airport exit. Drifting into Lyon for a look adds the city at the worst moment, with an unfamiliar van.
For the flight home, sleep on the east plain. Crossing the Presqu’île on a departure morning is the mistake this handover is designed to avoid.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
