The gate, the salt warehouses and the brick churches are the visit. The streets inside are residents, deliveries and one-way surprises. The driving exit is the A1 south, or the short run north-east to Travemünde and the Baltic resorts of Travemünde, Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz.

There is no cause to thread the island 'just to see'. The coast road is open, windy and lined with beaches that become a traffic event in warm weather. Inland, the Trave meadows are quieter. A supplier may hand over vehicles nearer the bays than the gate; if your yard is the city itself, you still leave toward the water rather than over the bridge into the old town.
