Plan your pickup and your first stop
Lille is a Flemish city in France: brick, a citadel by Vauban, and a dense old quarter of cobbles and tall houses.
Vieux-Lille is for walking. A campervan belongs on the plain outside, where the roads run fast toward the Côte d’Opale, the mining country, or the Belgian border. This is the opposite of a Provençal hill village. The sky is wide and the wind is a North Sea wind.
The city has a low-emission zone, and the centre is tram and pedestrian in spirit even where a car can still squeeze. Use Lille to change trains, to eat, and to start a northern trip. Do not use it as a place to sightsee from the driver’s seat. Dunkirk, the caps, and the quieter Flemish towns are the actual drives.
Do not navigate into Vieux-Lille. The cobbles and the one-way pattern are a walking map.
If the trip continues into Belgium, check the low-emission rules on that side of the border as well as the French sticker. The cities are close together and the rules are not identical.
Coastal pitches on the Côte d’Opale fill when the sun appears. On a grey weekday they are easy. Plan the sunny Saturday as the day you already have a pitch.
