Hiring a campervan in Le Mans

Le Mans has a Plantagenet old town of timber and stone, and a cathedral above the Sarthe.

It also has a race circuit that, for most of the year, is a set of public roads with roundabouts and suburban junctions. A campervan can use those roads as a curiosity when nothing is on, and should treat race week as a different city: closures, noise, and fields turned into temporary cities of their own.

Outside that week the town is a hinge between Paris and the Loire. The roads south touch the Loire châteaux; the roads west run toward Angers and the Mayenne. Nothing here has the drama of an Alpine pass or a Corsican ferry. The pleasure is a night in quiet country after a day in a centre best seen on foot.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Check whether your dates collide with the endurance race or a major test. Navigation that worked in April may be illegal in June.

  2. 02

The Cité Plantagenêt is uneven and narrow. Walk in from an outer stop rather than following a pin to the cathedral.

  3. 03

The ordinary Sarthe roads are unremarkable in the best way: easy gradients, frequent villages, and no need to attempt a mountain timetable. Use them to learn the van before a harder region.
