Plan your pickup and your first stop
Kehl faces Strasbourg across the Rhine, and the useful campervan ground is the harbour and the Europabrücke approaches, not the French cathedral quarter.
The German town is a working river place: quays, customs history, and a quick bridge into a much larger city. East, the Kinzig valley runs into the Black Forest toward Schiltach and Freudenstadt. The A5 is a few kilometres east of the river, on the way to that valley or north toward Baden-Baden.
Strasbourg's old centre is a tram city. If you cross, French low-emission rules may apply in the streets you actually enter, which is a separate question from anything on the German bank. A private van does not buy a German vignette to leave Kehl. It may need French paperwork to enjoy Strasbourg.
Decide about Strasbourg before you roll. If you go, read the current French emissions rule for the zone you will enter, and do not assume the cathedral has a coach bay.
The Kinzig valley's evening light goes early between the trees. If that is night one, leave Kehl with the pitch already chosen.
Flood marks on the Rhine quays are practical information. When the river is high, stick to the bridge and the A5 rather than a romantic quay-side shortcut.
