The practical long-distance link is east, through Leutkirch, to the A96 between Munich and Lindau. South, the land rises toward Weitnau and, much farther on, the higher Bavarian valleys. Those higher valleys are a different driving day, with steeper grades and more winter closure.
This Württemberg side of the Allgäu is dairy country: silos, chapel towers, and roads that exist for milk tankers as much as for visitors. A campervan fits the pattern if it stays on the paved links between villages and does not invent a shortcut across a meadow track. The Austrian line near Lindau is a vignette question only if you actually cross it.
Decide at the outset whether today ends on the A96 or in a higher valley. The two departures leave the municipality in opposite directions.
Snow tyres and a real winter forecast matter here earlier than they do on the Munich motorway. A pasture road can be clear at the shop and glazed in the next hollow.
Do not follow a farm track because a map shows it joining the next hamlet. Those tracks are private, soft, and the place a heavy van becomes a recovery story.
