Hiring a campervan in Hobart

Hobart is the capital of an island, tucked under kunanyi / Mount Wellington where the weather arrives faster than the forecast.

A campervan collected in the city is for Tasmania’s loop, not for a mainland highway that happens to start south. The Tasman Peninsula, with Eaglehawk Neck and Port Arthur, is a winding day. Bruny Island starts with the vehicle ferry at Kettering, which needs its own booking when the season is busy. Freycinet, the Bay of Fires and Cradle Mountain are further, still on an island where the distances look modest and the roads do not.

The Spirit of Tasmania docks at Devonport, hours north of Hobart. Flying into the capital and collecting in town is a different first day from driving off the ferry. A Hobart depot is not a pickup in every waterfront neighbourhood.

A few things worth knowing

If you are coming off the Spirit, budget the Devonport-to-Hobart drive before you promise yourself a waterfront evening. If you are flying in, the city handover skips that leg and starts you in the south.

Book the Bruny ferry for the vehicle, and check the last sailing. The island is not a place to discover you are too long for the ramp.

Use proper campsites. National parks fill in summer, and a beach pull-off is often signed against overnight stays. Keep the fuel tank healthier than the map distances suggest, because towns are small.
