Plan your pickup and your first stop
Heilbronn spans the Neckar with an Umweltzone in the inner city, and a west-bank start on the Böckingen side keeps the first kilometres off the pedestrian core.
The river is the landmark. North, Bad Wimpfen's painted houses sit on a bluff above a loop of the Neckar and are far too tight to drive. East, the Hohenlohe plain opens toward vineyard villages and, eventually, the Romantic Road towns. The A6 and A81 are the fast frame around all of this.
A green badge matters if you dip into the inner zone. You can follow the Neckar for a long time without doing that. Wine-village lanes off the valley road look like a shortcut and end as a courtyard. The plain to the east is the spacious alternative.
Park below Bad Wimpfen and walk up. The upper town is a postcard and a trap for anything with a rear overhang.
Carry the green Umweltplakette if the day's errands include Heilbronn's inner streets or a continuation into Stuttgart. The west-bank exit alone does not demand a tour of the zone.
Harvest traffic in the wine villages is slow and local. On those weeks, stay on the valley trunk road until you have a reserved pitch, then walk the last part.
