Plan your pickup and your first stop
Hannover (Isernhagen) is the string of villages immediately north of Hanover, and the handover sits among fields and a belt of woods, the sort of address that belongs on Am Walde rather than beside the opera house.
Garden centres, riding paddocks and the Wietze drainage ditches are the scenery. Altwarmbüchen's commercial sprawl and the A2/A7 tangle are close enough to hear and easy enough to join.
Hanover's inner Umweltzone is south of you. It matters when you drive into the city, not when you leave the village for the heath. The A7 north is the Lüneburg Heath and, eventually, Hamburg. The A2 runs east toward Braunschweig and Berlin, or west toward Minden. Those are the grown-up exits. The city is a deliberate turn off them.
Join the A7 or the A2 before you decide to 'just look' at the centre. The southern suburbs thicken quickly, and Hanover's green-sticker zone covers the inner city.
Altwarmbüchen clogs when the retail parks and the motorway junction share a rush hour. If you collect then, go north first and double back later.
The heath's famous pastures are sheep country with firm rules about overnight parking. Use a signed pitch; a birch clearing is not one.
