Hiring a campervan in Hamburg (Kayhude)

Hamburg (Kayhude) is a village handover on the upper Alster, north of Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein.

Segeberger Straße is a local road through fields and a few houses, opposite the kind of bus stop a rural timetable still bothers to name. It is not the Landungsbrücken, and the Alster here is a stream, not the lake the city postcards show.

The clean exit is north and west toward the A7 around Henstedt-Ulzburg and Kaltenkirchen, then either on toward Neumünster or east into the Holstein lake country around Plön and Eutin. South into Hamburg is possible and slow, and it is a city approach through Norderstedt rather than a scenic descent to the Elbe. Nothing about Kayhude requires a lap of the port.

A few things worth knowing

Set the next stop as the A7 or a lake pitch, not Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. The village road looks like it wants you to go south because that is where the traffic came from.

Kayhude has almost no services for a tall van. Fuel and supplies are in Norderstedt or on the motorway, not beside the Alster bridge.

The Plön lakes fill on warm weekends. Reserve the first night if that is the direction, and do not count on a verge beside the water.
