Plan your pickup and your first stop
Hamburg is a port you leave on a motorway.
The Speicherstadt, the Landungsbrücken and the Reeperbahn are walks from a parked van, not a sightseeing loop. The A7 runs north into Schleswig-Holstein and south toward the Lüneburg Heath, and it uses the Elbe tunnel. The A1 bends toward Lübeck and Bremen. The A25 is the eastern Elbe-side alternative when the tunnel is the wrong tool.
Check height, and any rule that applies to gas-fuelled vehicles, before you commit to the tunnel. Upstream bridges and the A25 exist for a reason. South-west, the Altes Land is orchard country on a dyke, pretty and slow. South, the heath is open pine and easier in a long vehicle. The port itself stays interesting from the opposite bank.
If you are unsure about height or onboard gas, skip the Elbe tunnel and use the eastern crossings. A wrong tube is a long reverse.
Do not follow a pin into the Speicherstadt. The warehouse streets are cobbled, crowded and full of height limits that are easy to see too late.
Harbour events and cruise-ship days freeze the northern bank. Sleep on the heath side or north of the city, and ride back in if the warehouses are the visit.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
