Hiring a campervan in Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a high-rise beach city, and a campervan collected here meets its hardest problem in the first hour: the strip was not built for a tall vehicle looking for a park.

The better trip leaves the towers quickly. Springbrook, Lamington and Tamborine Mountain are winding hinterland roads of rainforest and lookouts, close enough for a first day and narrow enough to punish an oversized motorhome. South, the Pacific Highway slides into northern New South Wales and a slower coast of towns.

Brisbane is only a short highway north, which tempts people to treat the two as one depot. They are not. A Gold Coast handover is a specific collection point, not a promise that every canal estate or beach suburb can release a van.

A few things worth knowing

Leave the high-rise streets as soon as the handover is done, and do not use a beachfront hotel driveway as a place to learn the vehicle. The hinterland roads are steep, shaded and busy on weekends.

Book a campsite off the strip for the first night. Holiday periods fill the coast, and a motorhome has fewer legal overnight options than a car.
