Gera sits on the White Elster in eastern Thuringia, and a southern district such as Liebschwitz is a calmer place to start than the theatre square.

The city has a compact centre, Otto Dix connections and a river that walkers follow more easily than vans. The B92 runs south toward Weida and the Thuringian slate hills, which is the scenic exit. North, the land opens toward Altenburg and, much farther on, Leipzig.

Trams cross the inner streets, so the driving plan is to join the southern valley rather than to orbit the theatre. The slate hills beyond Weida are wooded and thinly populated. The Elster meadows just outside Liebschwitz are the soft first hour, before any decision about how far north you really want to go.

A few things worth knowing

Set the first pin to Weida or to a meadow pitch south of the city, not to the theatre. The tram streets are the trap.

If the route later enters Leipzig, that city runs an Umweltzone and wants a green sticker. You do not need one to leave Gera.
