Hiring a campervan in Fulda

Fulda is the baroque town where the A7 meets the Rhön, and the practical start is on the eastern edge, in a district such as Andreasberg, rather than in the cathedral close.

The old centre is a walk of palaces and a domed church. The campervan landscape is the high grassland of the Wasserkuppe and the open Rhön, or the A7 itself running north toward Kassel and south toward Würzburg.

Fulda has no sticker zone of its own. Frankfurt, west along the A66, keeps an Umweltzone, so the green disc appears only if that motorway takes you into the city. The Rhön is the more interesting first day: wide ridges, wind, and small spa towns at the foot.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Leave the cathedral quarter on foot from a signed edge car park. The baroque streets photograph well and turn badly.

  2. 02

If the A66 is your way west, fit the green sticker before Frankfurt's Umweltzone, not when the skyline is already around you.

  3. 03

The Rhön is a wind plateau. A tall van on the Wasserkuppe road takes gusts that Fulda's valley does not hint at, and winter can close the highest lanes while the A7 stays clear.
