Plan your pickup and your first stop
Freiburg backs onto the Black Forest, and its centre is a tram-and-bicycle city with an Umweltzone.
The Bächle, those little water channels, are a clue: this is not a place to explore in a motorhome. The A5 runs on the Rhine plain west of town and is the easy exit north or south. The B31 east through the Höllental is the dramatic one, toward Titisee and the high forest, and it is winding.
A green badge is required in the inner zone. The Kaiserstuhl wine hills to the north-west are beautiful and full of village lanes that end at a wine-grower's gate. France is close at Breisach. The forest, not the old-town muffin sellers, is why a campervan starts here.
Fit the green Umweltplakette before you cross the inner zone, even if you intend to be on the A5 quickly. The approaches can dip inside it.
Titisee and Schluchsee pitches are a summer reservation. Arrive with the night solved, not with a hope that the shore will have room.
If you cross into France, check whether the town you enter expects a French emissions sticker. Breisach's German side does not remove that question on the other bank.
