Plan your pickup and your first stop
Frankfurt (Friedberg) is Friedberg in the Wetterau, north of the city on the A5, and the yard is an industrial estate below the castle hill rather than a desk at the Römer.
The old town climbs to a castle on a basalt knoll. Those streets are cobbled and short. Your first real road is the motorway, or the country lanes across the Wetterau's fields toward Büdingen and the Vogelsberg.
Friedberg has no Umweltzone. Frankfurt, if you drive south into it, does. The useful geography of this start is the open basin: wind, farms, and fast access both north toward Kassel and south toward the Taunus only when you want the hills.
Leave the castle hill to a walk from the lower town. Do not let a pin on the keep pull the van into the upper lanes.
If Frankfurt is later on the route, fit the green sticker before you enter its Umweltzone. You will not need it to exit Friedberg.
Büdingen's old centre restricts through traffic. Admire the gates from the legal side of the barrier and park where the signs tell visitors to park.
